Yaffle & drum

So, I was wandering around with a barrow this morning as the dawn broke, poo picking as you do … when I heard a couple of green woodpeckers yaffling at each other in the woods. Thought to myself that it’ll be lovely to hear the spotted ones drumming again soon as a reminder that Spring comes back eventually ... and as I was walking back to my car, there it was! The sound of Mr Spotted Woody W battering hell out of a nearby trunk as an early warning to all other woodpeckers that this territory is bagged for 2021.

Actually, one of the resident woodpeckers has learned that the percussive qualities of a bit of plastic on the top of one of the telegraph poles ensures he's heard much more easily with minimum effort; like the avian equivalent of a megaphone ... I often wonder if, when he eventually goes, any of the others will have picked up on this? ___________________

The heavy frosts of the last week has started to thaw although black ice on the drive to the yard this morning made for an interesting couple of moments! But it does allow for dawns like these …

Well, I say 'heavy frost' but I have to add here that I live about as far south in the UK as you can go without getting your feet wet, so I quite understand anyone who is currently snorting 'You call that a FROST?!' Point taken, but at least the frozen ground makes it easier to wheel a barrow over it than through West Country mud, so I'm going to count that as a win. Hope you're all able to get to your horses safely and that you can get some riding in this weekend! Kate

The idea for the Halter Hangars and the Lick Safe are had been floating around my head for a few years before I took the plunge and stated to turn ideas into reality. I started with the Hangars, as I was thoroughly fed up with wet head collars and losing hoof-picks in the long grass by my field gate. And then when I saw how successful the hood-shape was at keeping out the rain, I developed the Lick Safe ...
